12% YOY Growth according to IMS Business Report 2015

The dance music industry is booming, according to a new report presented by Kevin Watson, at this year’s International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza.

The report looks at several criteria across the globe including sales, festivals, social media, product, penetration of mainstream culture and DJ brand endorsements.

The report combines sales, festival revenue and other related product to estimate the industry’s global value of $6.9 billion. This is a 12% increase on last year and a 53% increase since 2012/13.

In both the USA & Canada, Dance is the 4th most popular genre for streams, higher than Country music. In the UK, Dance’s share of single sales reached 16%, an 8 year high in 2014. 27 of the 100 top selling singles of the year were Dance, as were 1st and 3rd most streamed tracks on Spotify (Clean Bandit – Rather Be, Mr Probz – Waves).

DJs are now endorsing high-end brands, competing with other well-known celebrities. Watson also points out that Electronic Music is now really penetrating mainstream culture in 2015 with a TV show, movie, biography and even a dedicated museum.

The report also highlights the huge festival growth and the EDM is the third most popular music genre on social media. Finally, the global DJ product market is now worth nearly $350m.
